Boot Camp Summary

In the book,"Boot Camp", a boy named Garrett was in love with his teacher, misbehaved and didn't listen to his parents. When it was dark, at night he was snatched by  agents that worked for a secret boot camp. This camp was called Lake Harmony. In Lake Harmony, it was cold with sement walls that didn't have windows. Garrett got beat up a lot and got into lots of trouble. These are some of the people that were mean to Garret, Troll, Unibrow Robert, Joe, Ron, Jon, and David zit face. After months of being at boot camp Garret decided that he needed to escape. Garret had made friends with a guy named Pauly and a girl named Sarah. These characters were very dynamic and were not just ordinary people. When they were escaping, they made it to Canada and Pauly and Sarah were on the other side of the river that Garrett had drove a boat across. Garret decided to save the people who worked at boot camp who were sinking in a boat instead of just running away and being free with Pauly and Sarah. The people who worked for boot camp had sent Garrett back to boot camp and he had got punished and so did everyone else just for Garrett's behavior. Garrett's parent's had decided that he had learned his lesson and they were proud they he had saved the people who worked for Boot Camp and was ready to go home. Pauly's parent's had found him, but Sarah had just disappeared and no one knew where she was. A possible theme could be, "behave and stay out of trouble because if you don't, you can get majorly punished for your actions." Another possible theme is," if you are kind and helpful to someone, something good might happen to you."(The second theme was more referring to the part at the end.) In this book there was a lot of character vs. character going on.

"Activism, Perspective, & Propaganda"

1. What do you know about news media and what makes a news source valid? What does news being located close to Hollywood have to do with validity? On a news source they try to make you fear. Mostly all of the top stories on the news make you fear. In Hollywood a lot of people get brain washed by all of the propaganda. Lots of famous people live there so there is a lot of drama.

"Simply Persuading Propaganda"

1. If you were trying to persuade someone to do something, what would you do and why? If I was trying to persuade someone, I would probably make a catchy tune so that people can memorize the product. I would say a whole bunch of good things about the product.

2. Define propaganda as though you were telling a third grader. Propaganda is telling somebody stuff that is not true to try and convince them to believe them.

3. Tell six different places where you find propaganda.(so don't name six commercials ect.) I find propaganda on the radio, in newspaper ads, in the government, on a commercials, at stores, and in magazines.

4. Define, as though a fourth grader, 5 techniques of propaganda you find online.(google)

5. Tell about a commercial that uses propaganda. Why does this propaganda work so well? The WhuNu commercial uses propaganda. It works so well because in the commercial, it says the cookies are nutritious, but still delicious.

6. Why do people use propaganda? People use propaganda to persuade people to believe what they are trying to tell them.

7. Why do people use persuasive techniques? What is the point? People use persuasive techniques to persuade people to buy their product. Persuasive techniques help people and give them ideas on how to sell their product.

8. Tell about a commercial that gets stuck in your head a lot. Why does this get stuck in your head? How do you feel about this commercial? A commercial that gets stuck in m head a lot is the WhoNu cookie commercial because I see the commercial a lot on t.v. and the tune is very catchy. "How delicious is nutritious too? WhuNu?", the commercial says. I feel like the cookies may have some ingredients in them that are good for you, but probably a lot of sugar in them. It makes me want to have one because they look delicious.

"Standard #7:Reads a book"

I am going to read "A Family Apart"
*I have to read every day for 20 minutes, and log to a blog at least 2 days a week
*my logs will be 6-8 sentences long

My favorite book

I would have to say one of my favorite books is The Tale of Despereaux by Kate Dicamillo because it is a very adventurous book about a brave mouse. I kind of forget some parts because I read the book in battle of the books in third grade. I can still remember that it was a good book though.
In class this week, we will create 3 posts on our individual blogs. To get this information, pull it off of Ms. Carton's blog and paste it into your post.

First Post:
Standards I am working on
Standard #, Standard definition, activity used to get this

Second Post:
My Favorite Book and WHY

Third Post:
My Predictions
2 Pictures you chose to make predictions about
Predictions with full detail explaining what made you think this.
The actual pictures, pulled from my blog.

What I accomplished today

I followed all of the directions on the paper and answered the questions on the powerpoint for option number one for the first hit.

1/25 Class Time Standards Focus

I am going to focus on my persuasive techniques standard today.

Persuasive Techniques

What is your favorite jingle?
-One of my favorite jingles is, "More saving, more doing, that's the power of the home depot." This is one of my favorites because I find it very catchy.
What slogan do you find yourself saying?
-I find myself saying the Sicily's Pizza commercial a lot because the number and jingle is easy to catch along with.

"My Predictions"

I predict that this man is going to trip over the sidewalk while chasing this dog because his foot looks like it is under the sidewalk, his is crouching down, and it looks like he is running fast.
The man, looking angry is chasing the dog with a tool in his hand.

I predict that the cat is going to play with the turtle because they look like good friends hugging each other, the turtle looks like he is trying to get out of the cat's paws, and the animals are cuddling up with each other.

A Good Book

I think "Deep Down Popular" is a good book because the charters in the book are interesting and adventurous. The protagnist is pretty easy to follow along with.
